Morning glory broke the mast and aborted the race
The German 86 foot yacht Morning Glory, with Hasso Plattner as skipper aborted its successful race in the Eurocard Around Gotland regatta on Tuesday afternoon. The reason was a broken mast, directly under the third spreader of the 135 feet high carbon fibre mast. No one in the crew was hurt and the broken part of the mast was immediately secured to avoid further rigging damages. Morning Glory proceeded directly to Sandhamn after the accident and made harbour early on Tuesday morning.
At the time of the accident Morning Glory was in a clear lead in the Grand Open class and was calculated to break the current course speed record.
